Launch of Drone Ltd. : Da Beginnin "Your Eyes in the Liberian Skies" Sunday, 01 Oc

On December 23rd, 2016, my father Kai and I arrived on board our sailing cruiser (YOLO, "you only live once"), a Beneteau Oceanis 411, in the Port of Monrovia. We came from Turkey, had traveled through 13 countries and had stayed 7 months on the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean.

It was during that journey that I noticed many things which were not well known in Liberia (at least to me), like parasailing behind a boat with a parachute, scuba diving with air bottle deep under water, water skiing on a board towed by a boat, jet-ski, deep-sea fishing, wind surfing, kite surfing (woah, in the Pirates' town of Essaouira, Marocco, beautiful and impressive) and of course the operation of the 41 feet sailboat in all weather, day and night. But let's come to the story, the beginning of Drone Ltd.:

DRONE Ltd. Liberia actually started on one of the many islands we visited in Greece.

I encountered a swarm of bees or wasps, so I thought, while climbing up a hill to an ancient castle. It turned out that no insects came at me but rather a small helicopter - a "drone" or "quadrocopter" or, scientifically, an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, as I later understood from the explanation of the operator of that thing. He flew it by looking at a screen which displayed the view of the camera that was mounted on the drone, which took pictures and videos of high quality. That's when I fell in love with the technology (the pilot was nice, too), the UAV called Phantom Four Professional + (the + stands for a HD extra bright camera monitor) built by DJI, that now I introduce to you as the first commercial drone service in the Republic of Liberia.

I will follow up with regular monthly articles concerning details of the technology, how it works, what it can (or cannot) do, how we will use it in Liberia, the laws and regulations governing UAV operations (they are aircraft, after all, and need a pilot and maintenance) and of course report on the development of our training facility that prepares qualified UAV pilots for operations and job placement.
